Diamond Acres Farm is owned and operated by me, Sue Williams. I am the ninth generation of farmers in Cassopolis Michigan. The original family farm was settled 176 years ago as the second parcel deeded in Cass County. We would have been the first family, if my ancestor had not gotten lost on his way to the Deed Office in 1834. I was raised in the traditional farm family, with uncles, aunts and cousins sharing in the work. My parents were pig farmers when Cass County led the nation in baby pigs born outdoors. My father had been an extension agent for Michigan State University and strongly believed in growing cover crops and rotating crops to build the soil. I was so young when I learn to drive our Allis Chalmers tractors that in order to stop I had to release the hand clutch and jump up to reach the brakes. Like many kids from small towns I was ready to leave when I turned 18, and left for Missoula Montana to attend University of Montana. After receiving my BA in Sociology, I joined the United States Army, where I became only the second female military police instructor in an age that the army was opening positions to women. Upon my discharge, I used my GI Bill to attend Oregon State University and Montana State University pursuing a second baccalaureate majoring in Horticulture. I also was able to fulfill a childhood dream and work for the Forest Service in Bozeman Montana. As much as I enjoyed the forest service, I missed farming, and owning my own farm soon became my life goal. I had the opportunity to manage several market farms in both Corvallis Oregon and Paw Paw Michigan, learning various aspects of truck farming. For me growing food is not only a calling, but a spiritual act.
